Who is Hitty?
The name Hitty, is short for Mehitabel. She is a 6.25-inch, peg-jointed antique wooden doll, who was purchased by Author Rachel Field and Artist Dorothy Lathrop in an antique shop in the 1920s. Together they wrote the Newberry Award Winning 1929 book, Hitty, Her First Hundred Years, detailing the imaginary adventures of the doll they had purchased. It is written in first-person by Hitty herself. She describes her extensive travels, adventures, and her experiences with many different people. Hitty is still in print and readily available.
The Original Hitty doll dates from around the 1820s or 30s, based on the idea that she was 100 years old when purchased by Dorthy Lathrop and Rachel Field, as represented in the story. Others however, based on her hairstyle and very close resemblance to china dolls of the time, are more likely to place her making at around 1860.
Todays modern reproduction dolls range in price from 60.00 to 700.00 (plus)
Here you will find my version of Hitty. However, these dolls already have homes. If you would like to adopt a Hitty of your own, please email me at hittycarver64@gmail.com
